BIOGRAPHY

I began my musical career in Seattle at age 4, playing a one-octave xylophone for my family and neighbors. Few were impressed with my creative expression, as it was still in its infancy. I branched out and played trombone in grade school, only to become dismayed at my incapacity to learn to read music. At age 13, I started to play bass guitar. The Beatles would become a significant and life-long influence, as would the Doors, Jimi Hendrix, Cream, Stravinsky, Prokofiev, and Shostakovich.

As my musical tastes matured I discovered “progressive rock” and my new heroes became Yes, King Crimson, Genesis, and Peter Gabriel, as well as Bela Bartok, Ernest Bloch, Vaughan Williams, and John Barry. This eclectic blend influences the musical expression that I invoke today in my compositions.

In 1973 I purchased a Rickenbacker bass, thanks to the influence of Chris Squire of Yes, a stalwart instrument that I still play. ‘Ric’ has significantly contributed to my musical development. I have also dedicated myself to exploring and expressing music through piano, guitar and synthesizer.

In 1992 I released Within the Heart, a recording that utilized my keyboard, bass and percussion skills as the foundation for the musical compositions. The recording received some national critical acclaim.

In 2006, at the age of 56, I bought my first 6-string guitar–a 1970s Gibson Blue Ridge acoustic. This would become my instrument of choice for the compositions presented on my second CD, Dose of Infinity, released in 2011. Beth Daunis’ heartfelt and skilled violin playing contributed significantly to the voice of this CD.

I completed my third CD, The Beautiful, in 2015, utilizing string synthesizer, guitar and bass, and the masterful talents of these other contributing musicians: Beth Daunis (violin), Eric Wilson (uilleann pipes) and Jason Carder (trumpet).

My music lends itself to soundscapes for film, video and dance. It tends to defy classification, but has been categorized in the genre of ‘trans-classical’.
